Best Pistes in Tignes

If you fancy some wide and rolling pistes then the place to head to is the Tignes Le Lac/ L'Aiguille Percee side of the mountain in Tignes. With a host of fantastic blue runs that can either be made into a long rolling piste by heading all the way back down to Le Lac or slightly shorter by doing a few loops of a chairlift higher up. Taking the Grand Huit chairlift up and heading down the Percee Neige blue piste you will find this run to be quieter than others in resort and with stunning views over the Tignes Valley it is one to head to. For spectacular views head up the Aiguille Percee and enjoy the famous 'Eye of the Needle' rock formation and take the lovely long Corniche blue piste down to the top of the Chaudannes chairlift.

For a challenging mogul covered black piste on the same side of the mountain you can head down the black marked Sache run. A long and steep piste that takes you all the way down to Tignes Les Brevieres this piste is not for the faint hearted. The challenging terrain and sheer length of this piste make it a real leg burner.

Our favourite area in the Tignes Valley is the Grand Motte. The glacier is the place to be for fresh snow and wonderful groomed pistes. Heading up the funiculare or the Les Lanches chairlift followed by the Vanoise from Val Claret you have access to a number of the best pistes in Tignes. One of our favourites is the Dahu red piste and then taking the skiers right at the fork you can connect onto the Double M, the top of this res piste is just beautiful. With hardly anyone on it, fantastic snow and a steep but wide piste you can scoot down whilst enjoying some of the most impressive views over the Espace Killy and Tignes. The piste then continues all the way down to Val Claret where you can whizz straight back up or enjoy the other Tignes areas.

From right at the top of the Grand Motte cable car you can take the fantastic red Glacier piste down, the wide open piste means that even though the cable car is full coming up everyone soon disperses and you get the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful glacier snow. The cable car queue can sometimes be a bit daunting as the masses try to make their way up to the top but it is definitely worth the wait for not only the ski down and fantastic quality snow, but also for the long breath taking views that stretch far out over the Alps.

Whilst up on the Grand Motte, if you fancy a challenge, try the black Leisse piste. Only for advanced skiers, this piste can get the legs working when it gets bumpy, depending on the conditions it can sometimes provide you with a challenge despite it being a relativity short run.

For something easy, gentle and just a little bit fun take the Chaudannes lift up from Tignes Le Lac and head down the blue rhododendron, followed by the Melezes, followed by the Myrtilles. These 3 blue runs combine to make one long piste all the way down to Les Brevieres and with a gentle gradient, beautiful mountain views and a fun path that winds through the trees it is a long piste that can be fun for families and groups of all different abilities. You can also stop for a cheeky beer, vin chaud or bite to eat at the bottom of the Brevieres pistes, giving your legs a chance to rest after the long run down.

Best Pistes in Val d'Isere

If you want to enjoy some gentle rolling pistes to get the legs warmed up then head up the Bellevarde side of the mountain and take a few laps of the beautiful green Grand Pre piste and the blue Club des Sports pistes off the top of the Grand Pre chairlift. Normally with fantastic snow and only a few skiers (including some beginners) with nice conditions all day long it can be the perfect place to start or end the day.

For something a little steeper and more challenging on the Bellevarde side of the mountain try the OK/Orange piste which can be accessed from the top of the Olympique bubble or from the top of the Funival from La Daille. These steep long race track red pistes are perfect for whizzing down first thing in the morning when they have just been groomed. Alternatively go for the Face piste - the downhill Olympic run in Val d'Isere with steep descents and when un-groomed large moguls definitely gets the legs working. With fantastic views over the Val d'Isere village take a pause on your way down and look out over the valley below.

If you love moguls then the best piste in Val d'Isere to head to is the Epaule du Charvet. This steep black ungroomed piste has the biggest moguls in the Val d'Isere valley and is definitely a leg burner. Located on the Solaise side of the mountain at the bottom of the Fontaine Froid lift the piste itself is not too long but that's actually a good thing with the challenging terrain. Often closed due to weather conditions and avalanche risk it is worth checking to see if this piste is open if moguls and steep pistes are your thing. On the same side of the mountain you will also find the challenging Piste S. Again an extremely challenging mogul run through the trees at the front of the Solaise, this ungroomed piste is only for the most advanced skiers but is definitely one to try if you fancy a challenge, just make sure your legs are warmed up first.

For quiet pistes and fantastic snow, the Le Fornet glacier has a lovely combination of red and blue pistes that remain quiet even in peak season. The Cascade red piste (off the top of the Cascade chairlift) is a particular favourite of ours and always seems to be in top-notch condition.

Another favourite of ours is the gully Piste L. Accessible from the Solaise Express and just a short ski away from the bottom of the Glacier chairlift this lovely blue piste is a gully all the way down to the Laisinant chairlift and can be great fun with kids. The sides roll upwards making turns just that little bit more fun and with a gentle gradient, this blue remains a firm best in Val d'Isere. This piste can sometimes be closed after a heavy snowfall so again, it is best to check it is open before setting off.
