Tignes le Lac to Tignes 1800

A medium length walk from Tignes le Lac to Tignes 1800

featured in Hiking & Walking Routes Updated

Taking just over an hour, this walk follows the path above the connecting river between Lac de Tignes and Lac du Chevril.

Starting near the Hotel Montana the route heads north along the path signposted for Tignes les Boisses. The path initially follows the curve of the mountain passing under the Télésiege de Chaudanne.

Staying above the road the path eventually leads you into the forest above Lac du Chevril. Once through the forest you will see Tignes 1800. From here follow the signposts to the tourist office, where you can catch a bus back to the start in Tiges le Lac or return via the same way to the starting point.

Worth knowing

Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.

Take care when crossing the road and be aware of cyclists using the trails.

Watch out for

Patou

This area is home to herds of sheep, which are protected by the Patou. There to protect the herd from predators, such as wolves and bears, these large dogs live with the herd constantly.

When encountering a Patou on foot it is essential to:

  • remain calm
  • don't make eye contact
  • avoid approaching the herd
  • don't make sudden movements
  • don't run
  • if they approach you, stop and let them sniff you
  • if it follows you simply continue walking slowly, keeping as calm as possible
  • if with your dog keep it on the lead, and go around the herd with a wide berth, or turn back if there's time
  • if hiking with children, educate them about these dogs and their herds - especially not to approach or pet them

We recommend checking with the tourist office in advance of your hike if you wish to avoid any unexpected encounters with a Patou and its herd.
